Second Tuesday Reading Group, Feb 9th, 7pm
On February 9 at 7 p.m., the book club will discuss The Winter Palace by Eva Stachniak. This is the epic story of Catherine the Great’s improbable rise to power—as seen through the ever-watchful eyes of an allbut- invisible servant. Her name is Barbara—in Russian, Varvara. Under the tutelage of Count Bestuzhev, chancellor and spymaster, Varvara will be educated in skills from lock picking to lovemaking, learning above all else to listen— and to wait for opportunity.
There is no host this month, because it’s Shrove Tuesday and most of us plan to eat pancakes until 7 (see page 1). So everyone is welcome to read the book and join us in the Lay Ministry Office (by the main office reception area) after the Pancake Supper.
